In real time, we are in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I will try to catch up with the highlights of our trip...but there are so many!
They learned all about Admiral Chester Nimitz in a museum that was added on to his grandfather's hotel. Chester graduated from Annapolis Naval Academy in 1905...even though his first choice was the army and West Point.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he became the commander-in-chief for the Pacific Fleet and was in charge of all naval action in the Pacific Ocean. I bet he liked the water as much a I do!
They give me water...and they drink the local brew!
In two days we ended up at a wonderful place called Big Bend National Park, in the SW corner of Texas. It's here that the desert meets the mountains.
I became very excited when I heard the name of this desert...I thought I would get to play with Chihuahuas! But I never saw any....then I remembered the Ranger said there were four kinds of rattlesnakes here....poor little chihuahuas!
The Rio Grande River carved out the Bouquillas Canyon from the Sierra del Carmen Mountains of Mexico. The trail went towards the wall of rock and then turned left, following the river. I wasn't allowed on the trails!
After much climbing and hiking, Momma got to see the narrow opening through which the river flows. On the way back she remembered the Ranger said not to hike alone because of the mountain lions....I bet they smelled my scent on her and were afraid to come close!
There wasn't much water in the river. This Mexican donkey could easily swim across if he wanted to.

Beautiful country and as usual........thanks for the interesting History lesson!! Drive safely and keep in touch. Love, Noreen
